What do I write about after a year of no blogging?

You know, after a year of not writing in my blog, you’d think I’d have something to say, and a lot of great things have happened, but I guess I’ll just do what I always do- talk about something stupid. Hehe.

Right now I can hear the new server’s hard drive chugging away as it’s installing Solaris 10. I’ve been working on migrating my old Linux server (600MHz system w/ Fedora Core 5 & 512MB of ram) over to the new one - a dual core Athlon 64 X2 w/ 2GB of ram. Nice upgrade. I keep making a few tweaks, and mucking with my cfengine rules, and reinstalling. I have this obsessive goal of doing the final upgrade, and upon reboot, the system comes up exactly the way I want it. There’s always something that could be tweaked, and/or fixed from when I was running my Linux system that I never fixed, so now’s the time. I’m having fun in the process, and that’s all that matters.

Oh, a old buddy from Netflix chatted with me, and mentioned that Netflix and a big re-org, and a bunch of people left or got fired (shocker there). Anyway, come to find out my old boss quit. This was a suprise, but he said that my boss quit because of exhausted (yes, another shocker). I feel bad for him, and it’s unfortunate that I started working there when he was there, otherwise I probably would have stayed on. Oh well. The end result is I’m over at Shutterfly now, and they (the company and the people) are everything I hoped for, and wish Netflix had.

Let’s see.. Z and I are taking a woodshop class on Tuesdays now. So cool. I never got into woodshop like I did with metal shop, but we are thinking of things we’d like to make. So far, the top of the list is a chicken coop. Apparently, we can have chickens in Santa Clara, they just have to be 50 feet away from a dwelling (which is kind of far if you map it out). Anyway, we got laughed at (sort of) for mentioning that it was what we wanted to make, so maybe we’ll have to reconsider. The #2 thing would be some shelves (attached to the wall) for the living room that goes across the far wall by the fireplace. I figure we could get our wood working mojo down before we do something that requires some sort of skill -afterall, chickens don’t really give a shit what their coop looks like. OH, so the teacher said that I looked familiar, and said someone that looked like me came by the shop inquiring about the classes. I said “Eh, I dont think so”. But then later, I remembered that my old chick friend Andie and I during one of our drunk-fests must have walked by the school, and I saw that it was open. Jeez- that was like 2 YEARS ago. So funny that I remembered it, and even funnier that he did.

So I just got a call from Z saying I should pick her up. One problem- Victoria (her friend from Switzerland who is living with us) is using the car to go return something at the mall so she has something to wear tomorrow. So hopefully V gets home a bit earlier so I can pick up Z. For the most part, we are just one big happy family- it’s really fun having V here.

Oh man, how could I forget? No, this isnt’ that exciting, but think twice before you buy a Magellan product- their tech support is absolutely the WORST. Of course, them being somewhat short sighted figured it’d be best to farm their support out to India. Needless to say, since JUNE of last year, and 6 phone calls later, I’m still trying to get a damn USB cable sent to me for my Explorist XL. Every time I call, they say “I’ll personally guarantee that the cable will be there in five days”. Two weeks later? NO cable. I call again today, “I’m so sorry, I’ll send a email to so-and-so, and it’ll be there in two days.” Yeah right. SO if you are reading this, think twice before getting a product from them. Shame on them for accepting this level of service for their products…

I should mention, during Z and I’s honeymoon, I found a drink that Z actually liked- the good ol’ Cosmopolitan. So, since we went to Belize, we got a great price on some Ketel One vodka, and I’ve made a few (just finished one now). Here’s the recipe:

2 oz. Ketel One vodka
1 oz. lime juice
1 oz. pomegranete juice (cranberry tastes pretty much the same to be honest)
1 oz. triple sec (DeKruyper is damn fine).

Shake all this together in a shaker w/ ice, and pour it into a martini glass. Nice finish, and easy to drink (almost as good as my venerable gin and tonics).
